Denver, USA – The 2024 International ArtScience Olympiad (IASO), also known as the International Olympiad ArtScience Contest (IOASC), concluded successfully at the headquarters of the SciArtUSA in Denver on August 15, wrapping up a five-day celebration of interdisciplinary creativity that ran from August 11 to 15. This year’s event, themed “Enlightenment,” drew 633 participants from 27 countries across six continents, each bringing works that blended scientific innovation with artistic expression to unpack the theme—from exploring how light interacts with natural ecosystems to using AI to visualize philosophical ideas about human understanding.
Co-Organized by the IASO Organizing Committee and the SciArtUSA – two leading global bodies dedicated to fostering art-science collaboration, the Olympiad featured a rigorous three-round judging process. A panel of 15 international experts—including 6 interdisciplinary artists, 5 research scientists (specializing in fields like optical engineering and computational biology), and 4 STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics) education advocates—evaluated entries based on three core criteria: alignment with the “Enlightenment” theme, technical innovation in merging science and art, and emotional or intellectual resonance with audiences.
Following the closing ceremony on August 15, the International Olympiad ArtScience Exhibition opened at the same SciArtUSA venue, set to run for two weeks until August 29. The exhibition features all 133 entries from the Olympiad, arranged in thematic zones like “Light as a Metaphor for Understanding” and “Data as Artistic Language.” To deepen public engagement with the “Enlightenment” theme, the exhibition also includes a series of curated workshops and lectures led by renowned guests.
“This year’s IASO isn’t just about celebrating winning works—it’s about using ‘Enlightenment’ as a bridge to connect people across cultures,” said Sarah Lopez, fellow of the SciArtUSA. “When a teenager from Brazil uses coding to paint a mural about climate science, or a researcher from Japan turns particle physics data into a dance performance, that’s the spirit of ‘Enlightenment’—breaking down barriers to understanding, together.”
